Norman M. Yackly, 88, of Westmoreland, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 17, 2012 in Rome Memorial Hospital. He was born on August 27, 1923 in Lancaster, PA; a son of the late Paul and Luella Yackly. After graduating from High School, Norman enlisted in the United States Army, serving during World War II. He saw the Battle of the Bulge and served under General Patton. He attended Franklin Marshall College in Lancaster, PA. On July 22, 1945 in Saginaw, MI, Norman was united in marriage to the former Cora Ehrlich; a blessed union of 63 years until her passing which occurred on December 20, 2008. He retired from Ulster Knife Company after many years of dedicated employment. Norman was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Royal Arch Mason of Pennsylvania, and St. Bernard Commandery Knights Templar. He enjoyed a good spy detective novel and playing on his computer. He especially enjoyed corresponding with friends and family and playing games. Norman is survived by a daughter, Sheila Truesdail of Westmoreland; a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Linda Yackly of North Carolina; four grandchildren, Jennifer and Brian Walden, Jessica Truesdail, Sarah and Daniel Velez, and Aric Yackly; two great grandchildren, David and Lena Velez; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Meserole and a brother, Paul Yackly. Mr. Yackly's memorial service will be held on Thursday at 2:00p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Rome. The family will receive relatives and friends following the service. There are no calling hours.
