Mary C. Doherty

Mary C. Doherty, 88, of Rome, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 23, 2012 in Rome Memorial Hospital with her loving family by her side. She was born on February 29, 1924 in Saranac Lake, New York; a daughter of the late Spencer and Minie Grace Farrell Booth. Mary was a 1941 graduate of Wappingers Falls High School. On November 6, 1943 in St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Mary was united in marriage to Royal Doherty Sr.; a blessed union of almost 53 years until his passing which occurred on July 28, 1996. She was employed at the Rome Daily Sentinel for several years. Mary was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church. She loved to cook and bake for her entire family. Mary adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mary is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Dianne and Joseph Ceklovsky of Rome; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Michael and Theresa Doherty of Rome, Royal and Mary Ann Doherty, Jr. of Verona, and Paul Doherty of Cazenovia; twelve grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; two sisters, Alice Almonti and Janet Faucher; two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Ruth and Joseph Duffy and Betty Doherty; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by a son, Richard Doherty on September 5, 1980; a sister, Polly Henderson; and a special brother-in-law, Walter Doherty. Mrs. Doherty funeral service will be on Wednesday at 10:30a.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Church where her Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated by Father Philip Hearn. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00p.m. at the Gulla Funeral & Cremation Services, 209 N. Washington St., Rome (336-5700). In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
