Donald “Butch” R. Jones, 82, of Rome, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, July 27, 2018 with his loving family by his side.
He was born on June 14, 1936 in Rome; a son of the late Howell and Helen Stott Jones. Butch was a 1955 graduate of Rome Free Academy where he played baseball and basketball. He honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corp. On April 30, 1960 in St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Whitesboro, Donald was united in marriage to the former Jeanne Geary. He was the owner and operator of Murcan Sales in Syracuse for 30 years then worked for LaSalle Labs in Little Falls. Prior to owning Murcan Sales he was employed by Mohawk Airlines and Univac.
Butch was a founding member of the Fran Allison Basketball League and was the director of Boys Post from 1960-1977. He was also a member of San Carlos Softball League and enjoyed to hunt and fish. Butch was a dedicated New York Yankee fan and was a member of St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jeanne; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Jim Harris of Rome and Julie and Travis Beckwith of Liverpool; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mickey and Kelly Jones of Westernville and Steve and Samantha Jones of Rome; eight cherished grandchildren, Dusty, Dylan, Josh, Ryan, Troy, Danny, Maura, and Taylor; a great grandson, Jayce; a sister, Patricia Mudry of Rome; a brother, Allen Jones of Rome; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Buddy Evans, Stanley Chmielewski, and Bill Kiser.
Butch was preceded in death by his good friends, Dave Morgan, Vinny Coccia, and Dick Gifford; a brother-in-law, Steve Mudry; two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Ed and Donna Cole and Dick and Betty Geary.
The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to Hospice & Palliative Care, especially, Irene, for the wonderful care and concern shown to Butch and his family.
Mr. Jones’s memorial service will be held on Wednesday at 10:30A.M at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church where his Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated by Rev. Philip Hearn. The family will receive relatives and guests following the Mass.
