Bernadine N. Darrow, 81, of Rome, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 16, 2012 in Bethany Gardens. She was born on December 7, 1930 in Rome, the daughter of the late Raymond and Isabelle Lewis Darrow. Bernadine graduated from Academy of the Holy Names in 1948. She retired from Rome Murphy Memorial Hospital in 1961 after 13 years of dedicated employment. Bernadine was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church and the Altar Rosary Society, Rome Theresians Society, Queen Esther Rebecca Lodge # 71, and TOPS NY 79. She was also an honorary member of the Rome Lions Club and volunteered as a Braille proof reader for the National Library Service. Bernadine will be remembered for her sunny disposition, determination and independence, her infectious laughter, and stories about her childhood. She is survived by many cousins and friends too numerous to mention and her long-time friend, Sandy Simpson. Miss Darrow's funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11:00a.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Church where her Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated. Interment will be in Rome Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Wednesday from 3:00 to 6:00p.m. at the Gulla Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc., 209 N. Washington St., Rome, (336-5700). The family extends sincere gratitude and appreciation to the staff at Bethany Gardens for the special care and compassion shown to Bernadine. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Mary's/St. Peter's Church or the Rome Lions Club.
